Attached below are the first of the Teacher Guide documents that teachers at my school use to help them plan Reading units. We run with 4 x 45 minute sessions over a fortnight. The format is outlined here:
The idea is that the skills are transferrable across KS2 and into KS3, with teachers selecting appropriate texts with which to practise and apply the techniques being taught. Teachers choose from the range of tasks, which all require the application of the skill and allow children to practise the methods and technique so that they can then be applied to any new text they meet. The texts, tasks and questions chosen will depend on the need/capability of the class but, importantly, the methods stay the same. Specific question stems (from Tennent, 2014) are included to help teachers select questions appropriate to that unit.
Planning guides for the units ‘Getting the Gist and Summarising’ and ‘Skimming and Scanning’:
Getting the Gist and Summarising
NB: The ‘Getting the Gist and Summarising’ unit should be completed before ‘Skimming and Scanning’ because children will need to apply skills learnt in summarising when they are learning how to ‘skim’ the text.
